Assess students’ understanding of the constitutional separation of powers and checks and balances in the U.S. federal government: foundations in Articles I–III, distinct powers of the legislative, executive, and judicial branches, mechanisms that limit or check power (vetoes and overrides, appointments and advice-and-consent, impeachment, judicial review, congressional oversight, treaty and war powers), and application to short scenarios or historical examples showing interbranch conflict or cooperation.
