Assess students' ability to apply semiotic and postcolonial frameworks to analyze visual rhetoric in British colonial photographic archives (1850–1920). The quiz will test close-reading of photographic signs, composition, and codes; interpretation of denotative and connotative meanings and the colonial gaze; contextualization using provenance, captions, and circulation; deployment of postcolonial concepts (e.g., Orientalism, subalternity, mimicry); and formulation of evidence-based, reflexive interpretations that address ethical and archival biases.
