Assess students' ability to rewrite a short-story scene from a different character’s perspective: using a provided one-paragraph scene (approx. 150–300 words), students will produce a 200–300 word rewrite that preserves the original events but shifts focalization to another character. Evaluate correct application of point of view (first vs. third person choices), narrative voice and tone, use of interior thoughts vs. observable behavior, characterization through action and dialogue, and consistency of plot details. Include a 2–3 sentence rationale explaining how the shift changed characterization and reader empathy.
