Test students' ability to apply iconographic analysis to Renaissance altarpieces to interpret patronage and devotional functions. Given an image or detailed description of an altarpiece, require identification of key iconographic elements (saints, symbols, donor portraits, heraldry, inscriptions, gestures), explanation of how these elements signal patron identity, social or religious agendas, and intended devotional practices, and situating the reading within historical, liturgical, and patronage contexts using at least two kinds of supporting evidence (visual detail, archival/liturgical source, or scholarship). Responses should present a concise, evidence-based argument (approx. 300–500 words).
