Assess early elementary students' understanding of how forest, pond, and desert habitats supply the basic needs of plants and animals—food, water, shelter, space, and sunlight. Students should identify examples of plants and animals in each habitat, describe simple adaptations or habitat features that meet those needs, and make basic comparisons across habitats. Acceptable item types include labeling, matching, short written explanations, and drawing-based responses; appropriate for Pre-K–Grade 2 with emphasis on reasoning and concrete examples.
