Assess students' ability to evaluate, compare, and critically justify the use of competing theoretical frameworks for discourse coherence and cohesion in advanced academic English. Items will require: identification of core assumptions and analytical constructs (e.g., cohesion devices, coherence relations, centering, RST, genre-based approaches, relevance/pragmatic accounts); appraisal of empirical support and methodological tools (qualitative discourse analysis, corpus metrics, Coh-Metrix); analysis of strengths, limitations, and applicability across academic genres and registers; and reasoned recommendations for research design, pedagogy, or assessment based on theoretical fit and evidence.
