Assess students' ability to analyze cohesion (lexical ties, reference, conjunction, substitution/ellipsis) and rhetorical move structure (e.g., Swales' CARS moves and steps) in research-article introductions: identify and label moves/steps in short excerpts, map the cohesive ties that connect sentences to each move, evaluate how cohesion supports argument progression and authorial stance, and propose targeted revisions to improve coherence and move realization. Include one or two brief introduction excerpts from different disciplines; require evidence-based explanations for each judgment.
