Assess undergraduate students' ability to apply Lagrange multipliers to solve constrained optimization problems for functions of several variables: set up the Lagrangian for one or more equality constraints, derive and solve the resulting system for critical points, use the bordered Hessian or second-derivative criteria to classify extrema, compare feasible candidates (including boundary cases on closed sets), and address degenerate situations where constraint gradients are linearly dependent.
