Assess students' ability to analyze rhetorical move structure and metadiscourse markers in L2 doctoral dissertation introductions: identify and label moves (e.g., establish territory, niche, present study) using CARS-derived frameworks; annotate metadiscourse categories (transitions, hedges, boosters, engagement, self-mentions); compare patterns across disciplines and L1 backgrounds; justify coding decisions with textual evidence; and evaluate communicative effectiveness and pedagogical implications, using qualitative annotation and basic quantitative summaries where appropriate.
