Assess students' ability to apply formal analysis and iconographic methods to Caravaggio's The Calling of Saint Matthew (c. 1599–1600). Require identification and analysis of key formal elements (composition, chiaroscuro/tenebrism, gesture, spatial organization, color and texture) and interpretation of iconographic signs (gestures, attributes, biblical reference, light as divine sign) within a Counter-Reformation context. Students should produce focused short answers and one concise essay that uses visual evidence to argue for a coherent interpretation of how form and iconography work together to create meaning, and briefly consider at least one alternative reading.
