Assess students' ability to apply elements of plot, character, and dialogue to create and justify an alternate ending for a grade-level short story. Students will analyze conflict, rising action, climax, and character motivations; write a coherent alternate ending (150–300 words) that preserves voice, tone, and theme; and provide a focused justification (75–150 words) citing specific plot events, character traits, and lines of dialogue as evidence.
