Assess students' ability to analyze how an author's tone, diction, and syntax combine to create voice in contemporary short fiction. Students will read one or two brief excerpts and be asked to identify specific examples of tone, word choice, and sentence structure; explain how each element shapes narrative voice, character perspective, and reader response; and support interpretations with textual evidence, including one short comparative task contrasting voices across excerpts.
