Test students' ability to analyze and compare montage techniques and ideological messaging in Sergei Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin (notably the Odessa Steps) and Dziga Vertov's Man with a Movie Camera, including identification and application of montage types (metric, rhythmic, tonal, intellectual), documentary versus fictional strategies, 1920s Soviet historical/contextual factors, close-reading of key sequences, and evaluation of how editing constructs political meaning and spectator response.
