Assess graduate students' basic understanding of the global carbon cycle by testing recall of major carbon reservoirs (atmosphere, terrestrial biosphere, oceans, sediments/fossil fuels), principal pathways and processes (photosynthesis, respiration, decomposition, ocean uptake, chemical weathering, sedimentation, volcanism), typical timescales of exchange, and the primary anthropogenic influences (fossil fuel combustion, land-use change) that alter natural fluxes and budgets.
