Assess students' ability to apply watershed management principles to design, justify, and evaluate interventions that reduce agricultural nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) runoff into a nearby river. Scope includes watershed assessment (land use, slope, drainage, pollution sources), selection and siting of appropriate best management practices (e.g., buffer strips, cover crops, retention ponds, constructed wetlands, nutrient management plans), simple estimation of expected load reductions, consideration of costs/maintenance and stakeholder impacts, and a basic monitoring/assessment plan.
