Assess students' ability to apply semiotic and visual culture methods to interpret how contemporary museum exhibitions represent race and identity. Tasks include close readings of objects, labels, spatial arrangements, lighting, and paratexts; situating displays within historical, institutional, and power relations; identifying semiotic codes, visual tropes, and intersectional dynamics; evaluating curatorial choices and audience reception; and proposing evidence-based alternative readings or interventions grounded in relevant theory and case examples.
