Assess undergraduate students' understanding of speech act theory (assertives, directives, commissives, expressives, declarations), direct vs. indirect speech acts, and analysis of politeness strategies (Brown & Levinson's face concepts; bald-on-record, positive/negative politeness, off-record) through short English discourse excerpts. Tasks include identifying and labeling speech acts, explaining which politeness strategies speakers use and why given context (social distance, power, imposition), and proposing context-appropriate rewrites with justification.
