Assess graduate-level understanding of the major carbon reservoirs (atmosphere, oceans, terrestrial biosphere, soils, lithosphere) and the principal fluxes linking them (photosynthesis, respiration, ocean–atmosphere exchange, sedimentation, weathering, fossil fuel combustion), including typical reservoir magnitudes (orders of magnitude), dominant directions, characteristic timescales, and the primary human perturbations affecting the global carbon balance.
