Assess understanding of mechanisms regulating soil carbon stabilization in temperate forests — including particulate vs. mineral-associated organic matter, aggregation, organo-mineral interactions, microbial processing and priming, root inputs and mycorrhizal influences — and evaluate how common land-use changes (conversion to agriculture, logging, afforestation, urbanization) alter C pools, turnover rates, and management implications for carbon retention.
