Evaluate graduate students' ability to analyze the effects of IMF/World Bank structural adjustment programs (1980–2005) on state capacity, the provision and financing of public services (health, education, infrastructure), and the emergence, strategies, and outcomes of social movements in Sub-Saharan Africa; expect synthesis of quantitative and qualitative evidence, comparison of case studies, assessment of causal mechanisms (fiscal retrenchment, privatization, decentralization), and formulation of policy or historiographic interpretations.
