Assess graduate students' ability to analyze and compare narrative structure, mechanisms of memory construction, and ethical representation of historical trauma in W.G. Sebald's Austerlitz and selected postwar novels by Kenzaburō Ōe; tasks require close reading of narrative techniques (temporality, fragmentation, archival images), situating arguments in trauma studies and ethics, and supporting claims with textual and secondary evidence.
