Items will test ability to identify linguistic hedges (modal verbs, epistemic adverbs, approximators, boosters), analyze how hedging constructs authorial stance, mitigates claims, manages reader uptake and intersubjectivity, recognize disciplinary variation, and revise sample sentences to achieve intended rhetorical effects.
