Assess students' ability to identify and interpret recurring symbols and major themes in 19th‑century Gothic literature by analyzing primary passages and whole works; scope includes motifs such as the sublime, the uncanny, decay/degeneration, haunted spaces and monstrosity, questions of gender and social anxieties, use of literary terms (symbol, motif, allegory), and connecting textual evidence to historical/cultural context.
