Assess students' ability to analyze the primary causes (land-cover change, surface albedo and materials, urban geometry, reduced vegetation and evapotranspiration, and anthropogenic heat) and the environmental impacts (localized temperature increases, higher energy demand, deteriorating air quality, public-health risks, altered hydrology and ecosystem stress), including evaluation of the relative importance of factors, spatial/temporal patterns, and implications for mitigation and urban planning.
