Assess graduate students' ability to analyze how elements of electoral system design (district magnitude, electoral formula, thresholds, ballot type, openness) shape party system fragmentation across Latin America between 1980 and 2020. Test measurement (effective number of parties, fragmentation indices), interpretation of cross-national and case-study evidence, research designs for causal inference, and policy implications for party consolidation and reform.
