Assess students' ability to identify and interpret common symbols and major themes in 19th-century Gothic literature—such as decay, doubling, the uncanny, the sublime, entrapment, gender and class anxieties, and the conflict between science and superstition—through close reading of short passages and questions requiring textual evidence, explanation of symbolism, and connection to historical/cultural context and authorial intent.
